There are several reasons why you may need a dental extraction, for example, you may need your wisdom teeth removed, you may have a tooth infection or excessive tooth decay. If you have braces, you may need a tooth pulled to make way for the teeth that are shifting into place. Tooth extraction is an outpatient procedure that is performed by a dentist or oral surgeon. Dr. Jas Arora is a dentist at Oxford Smiles in Marlborough MA and she can perform dental extractions. To learn more about Marlborough Extractions, contact her office today.
Marlborough Extractions Procedure
- Marlborough dental patients who are having a tooth pulled are first given a local or general anesthesia, depending on the type of extraction and their personal preference.
- Your dentist will then gently loosen the tooth from your gum to make the extraction easier. Using an instrument called an elevator, your dentist will widen the gum tissue to loosen the tooth as much as possible so that the extraction does not damage the surrounding tissue.
- A small pair of forceps will be used to grip the tooth. Your dentist will then gently move the tooth back and forth to detach it from the root.
- Once the tooth has been extracted, a clot will form in the socket. Your dentist will pack it with gauze and ask you to bite it gently. You should not bite hard enough to break the clot.
In some cases, Marlborough extraction is difficult, for example, if the tooth is broken. In this situation, your dentist will extract the tooth piece by piece. If a tooth that needs extracting is not visible from the surface of the gum, a small incision is made so that your dentist can reach it.
